After you send it

What happens to the brief.

Nothing here is automated. A person reads what you send, works out the access at both ends, and writes the quote. That is slower than an instant figure from a calculator, and it is the reason the number does not move afterwards.

For moves abroad, we do not give a figure over the phone before seeing the job, by photos, video or a visit. A number quoted blind has to change once someone sees the stairs, and that change always lands at the worst moment. If you need an early steer on whether a budget is realistic, say so in the notes and you will get an honest answer in writing.

What makes a quote accurate.

  • Photographs, not descriptions

Walk every room and photograph it, including the loft, the garage and the garden if anything is coming from them. A written list consistently under-counts — what people call "a few bits" is usually a room. Add one shot of the approach to the property from the road: that is the picture almost everyone skips and the one that most often changes the price.

  • The access at both ends

Floor number, whether there is a working lift, how far the van can get from the door, and whether the street is controlled. A second-floor flat with no lift is a materially different job from the same flat with one, and the receiving end matters just as much as the collection — it is the half people forget to mention.

  • Anything unusual, named

A piano, a safe, a very large aquarium, a motorbike, a full workshop, or a collection that needs its own cover. None of these is a problem; all of them are decisions that have to be made before the day rather than on it. The same goes for anything heading into storage rather than straight to the new address.

  • Your date, even if it is a guess

A provisional month is enough to start. If you are in a chain and nothing is fixed, say so — holding a provisional slot and moving it is straightforward; finding a crew at very short notice in a month-end week often is not.

Going to Europe?

Add the destination country and whether you are moving your own used belongings as part of a change of residence. That one answer decides which customs route applies and what paperwork has to exist before the van leaves, and it is far cheaper to establish now than at a border. The four route briefs set out what each destination asks for.
